The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) delivered a 100,000 Euro donation in cash to the Iranian Red Crescent Society (IRCS) and has also allocated another 300,000 Euro for the IRCS’s response to the recent flash floods in Iran.

Tehran (ICRC)- The ICRC recently delivered a donation in cash, amounting to 100,000 Euro to the Iranian Red Crescent Society (IRCS) in order to support its relief operation for flood affected population in the Islamic Republic of Iran.

During his meeting with the IRCS President in Geneva, Peter Maurer, the ICRC President, confirmed that the ICRC would increase its financial support to the IRCS in the coming weeks.

Meanwhile, the Head of the ICRC Delegation in Iran, Marc Achermann expressed once more his sympathy and solidarity with the population affected by the floods, adding that the exclusive humanitarian mission of the ICRC is to protect the lives and dignity of victims of armed conflicts and to provide them with assistance. Nonetheless, Achermann added, “in times of natural disasters, and as a partner to the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, the ICRC supports its Movement partners, namely National Societies and the IFRC, to the best it can”.

Praising the Rescue and Relief operations of the IRCS, Achermann stated that the ICRC conveyed shortly after the flash floods to Iranian officials its readiness to provide its humanitarian expertise available in Iran, for instance in terms of restoring family links (RFL) or mine risk education (MRE).

Achermann added that for the first phase of its support, the ICRC delivered 100,000 Euro donation in cash to the IRCS, and another 300,000 Euro has been allocated to assist the people affected by the floods, in the second phase, to be delivered in the coming weeks.

As agreed by the partners, those contributions will be used for procurement of emergency items including tents, blankets, and kitchen sets for distribution amongst those who

sustained the worst losses as the result of the earlier floods in Iran as well as for replenishment of the IRCS warehouses for future distributions.
March and April flash floods in Iran affected 2,000 cities and over 300,000 Iranians all over the country. The IRCS responded to these floods by deploying 3,900 teams to provide relief and rescue services for the affected population.
