The news that our colleague Somayyeh Mir Abo Eshagh, from the Iranian Red Crescent Society (IRCS), was killed in an airstrike three days ago, in Isfahan province is devastating. We mourn this terrible loss, and our thoughts are with her loved ones and the IRCS during this difficult time.
A rescuer, instructor and volunteer with the IRCS in the city of Khansar, Somayyeh’s colleagues praised her for her dedication to help members of her community.
It is now the second IRCS colleague to be killed while performing their humanitarian duty since the escalation of hostilities over a month ago. It shows once again the unacceptable toll that humanitarian workers are paying to armed conflict. International humanitarian law is clear: humanitarian personnel, premises and vehicles are protected, they save lives, and they should never be targeted.
