Iran and the ICRC share a long history, dating back to 1874 when Iran acceded to the original Geneva Convention for the Amelioration of the Condition of the Wounded in Armies in the Field.
The humanitarian dialogue objective of the ICRC in Iran entails regular exchanges of views and consultations with the Islamic Republic of Iran on humanitarian priorities in the region in a bid to gather support for its neutral, impartial and independent humanitarian action. It also involves exchanges to address humanitarian issues and concerns, and the respect of the International Humanitarian Law in the region. These discussions are carried out through bilateral confidential dialogue as the ICRC traditional mode of action. Moreover, the ICRC engages with the concerned Iranian authorities and stakeholders on humanitarian law developments and evolving global humanitarian policies, such as impacts of diverse range of digital technologies on conflicts and humanitarian action.
