Iran’s strategic location, with access to international waters through the Persian Gulf and a well-developed transportation network of roads, rail, and air, makes it an effective hub for the ICRC’s logistical support in the region.

Its proximity to Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, and the Caucasus, where the ICRC runs major humanitarian operations, further enhances its role in emergency response efforts. Over the years, Iran has become a key transit route for relief goods, facilitating the movement of humanitarian aid to neighboring countries.

Additionally, high-quality, and competitively priced Iranian products have made the country a regular supplier of water and sanitation materials for the ICRC operations. The increasing flexibility and capacity of the ICRC’s presence in Iran continue to strengthen its ability to support humanitarian efforts both regionally and beyond.

In 2024, the ICRC:

  • Conducted Quality Health Social and Environment (QHSE) assessments for suppliers of textile factories, water treatment chemicals, and DNA biotech companies.
  • Facilitated the transit of trucks of humanitarian goods from Bajgiran (Iran-Turkmenistan) to Jolfa (Republic of Azerbaijan).
  • Procured and delivered packages of orthopedic items to Kabul for the ICRC operations.
